Summertime fun!

Everyone is excited about the beginning of summer.  I hope your family will have a great summer break filled with lots of fun family activities.  Visits to the park, outdoor picnics, baseball games, and trips to the lake to splash in the water will all be refreshing changes from the routines of the school year.

Hopefully, you can also find time to include reading in your schedule.  Reading is the foundational skill that is needed in every classroom.  Research shows that the one best predictor of success in school, college, and beyond, is the ability to read well and enjoy reading.  This comes with practice.  I encourage you to find some time for your child to read this summer.  Take trips to the library.  Choose a book and read it as a family.  You can even take turns reading.   You could plan a scheduled time three or four times a week when TVs and computers are turned off and everyone in the family reads.  You can read a variety of things—newspapers, books, magazines, Sunday School lessons—just read!!

Parents you can also watch for natural opportunities in every day life to practice math.  Kids are always asking when they will use math—now is your chance to show them.  Buying items at the grocery store, calculating change to be returned from purchases or savings from a 10% off sale item, measuring ingredients for a cake in the kitchen are all ways to show our children that math is an essential skill.

Summer should be filled with fun and relaxing activities and plenty of time for family get-to-gathers; but that does not mean that learning has to stop.
